Day 281: A total lunar eclipse

Day 281: ...almost totally eclipsed by clouds

We've been anticipating this day, more properly, this evening...a lunar eclipse and you know what that means for photographers, dear reader...

There was much to be done in and around town today in further preparations for the trip but really I was aiming for this evening. We've had pretty good weather for a while.

5.30pm: preparations for an eclipse: clouds.

There may be an eclipse in there somewhere
6.10pm: preparations ongoing but...clouds.

There was a very intensive, anxious twitter conversation along the way...pressure and the weight of expectation applied by others to @shelleymlloyd and @psephy...

Build-up...

Anticipation...

Will it...or won't it?

Here in Queensland, we were expecting to see the eclipse from about 8.15pm for about an hour. I experimented with a range of apertures, shutter speeds and ISO ratings. I was really pleased to see the clouds move away but they were blown away by a strong wind and I was unable to get enough shelter to avoid some movement of the camera on longer exposures (even with a tripod). So while I'm not completely satisfied with the clarity and focus I hope some of these pics give you an idea of what we saw tonight.

The stars, the light cloud cover, the blood moon

Gone again

And one of the lovely side effects of long exposure...we saw some stars. A challenge but a good one.
