Day 186 2015: The 75th birthday of a grand old bridge...

Day 186: ...and what a Story

There was much I should have been doing. And there was much I did do. Washing, reading, bike-riding, more attempts at sorting the last Ekka entry (hand-coloured pic...different paper this time...), oh and a film version of the Royal Opera Ballet's performance of La Fille Mal Gardee which was marvellous, especially The Clog Dance which is a killer piece to play on the clarinet...

It was also interesting to see because when a Parisian Ballet Company came out to perform it in Brisbane a few years ago, most of us were locked out of the opening scene because of a terrible traffic jam on the day and we didn't see the end because the male principal, in his finale, snapped a tendon in his knee, collapsed and the show ended before the end.

But really, this was all just dilly-dallying because the real show in Brisbane today was over on the Story Bridge. Not all of us got to go on, it was ticketed, with some difficulty.

In recent years, the bridge has come to put on quite a light show each week, themed for different causes but this week it was all the colours, for its birthday. And at the end of the day, I ducked into town to catch it from a sneaky corner of the Botanical Gardens...

Party on deck

And at the other end

Purple...

Blue...

And a passing CityCat

A bridge I drive over almost every day. And a grand structure reminiscent of Sydney's Harbour Bridge with some important connections between the two. It's a grand old gesture of a time when governments weren't afraid to build the infrastructure when needed, as needed. It probably wouldn't be built today.

And on a happy birthday day, a hibiscus in a friend's front garden...

Winter hibiscus

...just because. Just because I can.
