Day 15, 15 Jan 2017: Life as a high wire act...

Day 15: ...something something birds and academia

Yesterday's post made an unintended allusion to the life of birds and academia. Well, today might be a bit the same. Unintentionally.

It is cold at the moment. It is winter. It happens. That sort of weather where ones asks oneself, 'Does one really need to go out, even for a photo shoot? Perhaps one could stay in and review tomorrow's lecture...' And so I did. Stay in, that is. It seemed the sensible thing to do, weather-wise.

Besides, with just two weeks left of the academic year, there is still much to do. And it has been a full-on year, all new subjects all requiring new notes and although I am familiar with the subject matter, standing in front of students and presenting in Japanese has been, well, a high wire act at times. Actually, lecturing tends to be like that much of the time--maintaining interest, tension, direction...

I did venture out for a bit of a walk later in the day though. On my return home, I spotted them. The birds, perhaps over one hundred, variously perched on a high wire or flying around.

At first, it was just about the branches against the twilight...

Then I saw them..

And more

And they perched...

In their hundreds

Twittering away

All along the lines

Just gathering...

In rows and rows...

Like a piece of complicated music

I know what that feels like. Just two weeks left.
